Genre: Romance, New Adult
Recommendation: Not so much. Although it had some interesting ideas behind it, this book needs a lot of well..everything.
Type: Series, this is the first book released in The Escaped series.
Summary: +interesting premise -one dimensional characters -wordy and boring at times -awkward love connection -no actual romance -hard to follow
There is a world that runs parallel to our own, a world in which the souls of the damned are caged, where they are looked over by the Furies, and where they spend eternity in torment, mirroring the devastation and mayhem they created when alive.
Someone has opened the cage.
The worst of terrors has crossed the barrier that separates our world from theirs, and the Furies send a great, albeit untested warrior—their only son, Alek—to try to bring those souls back. He is young and handsome, headstrong and impulsive, and he won’t be able to do it alone.
Eva has grown up, beautiful and beloved, but surrounded by secrets. First, she will be hunted in an ancient feud that will threaten her life. Then, she will become the hunter.
With the police closing in and two worlds on the verge of crumbling around them, Alek and Eva must find each other, discover the limits of their powers, and work together to save everything they hold dear, including one another. Blending elements of mythology with the dazzling storytelling that her fans have devoured through the HOUSE OF NIGHT series, Kristin Cast weaves a spellbinding and passionate tale that starts a thrilling new series with an explosive charge.
Amber Smoke has a cover that immediately made me think of one word…sensual. Between the mysterious title and the beautiful cover art, I was pretty excited to read it. Sadly, I knew within the first two chapters that this book would not be for me. Why? Well, this book is like 80% conversation between characters and 20% actual events taking place. The first half of the book is stagnant and moves extremely slow, not to mention it actually felt ( and I hate to use this word) boring.
The story starts off with the furies explaining their situation and therefore setting up the plot but man, it is so dry. There is no emotion, no excitement and it just felt dull. The relationship between the Furies and Alek feels plastic and the relationship between Alek and Eva isn’t any better. All the characters in this story are one dimensional and lack any real substance. It is almost completely void of romance, feelings and sexiness. There is one paragraph that was difficult to even follow that mentions sexual feelings and a strangely sexual dream of sorts but that is pretty much it. The whole thing is really quite a mess.
I was super disappointed because it sounded like such an awesome concept but the writing did not bring it to reality. I will not be reading any additional books in this series. I hate to be so blunt but in all seriousness I almost couldn’t finish it and it’s only a little over 200 pages!
